Very secluded, beautiful contemporary bungalow home is located at the end of a gravel road in the middle of the island surrounded by a maritime forest and salt marsh. Captain Jet Carr, a charter boat captain, chef, seamstress and well-known Ocracoke fixture for many years, designed and custom built this home for herself in 2006. Cap't Carr took great pains in building this home to ensure its longevity: quality island craftsmanship, pine board and batten siding, shingled roof and a galvanized metal cover over its chimney. Loft off living room with sleeping quarters is currently used as an extra bedroom for guests, but could also be used as a study or storage area. Since 2006 Captain Carr's has endured a number of storms including the most recent Hurricane Dorian that devastated much of the island. At 8 ft. above high water Captain Carr's pulled through Hurricane Dorian with nary a single drop of water on her main nor any other damage to her hull. There are no other neighboring homes forward, aft or starboard. There is a part-time neighbor to her port side (great neighbors, by the way) separated by a portion of their property filled with trees. The sounds of herons, kingfishers, frogs and geese flying overhead add to the tranquil setting with a wrap-around screened-in porch. Lush landscaping. Double glass French doors accessible through its screened front porch open to a tiled foyer with a large skylight added in 2015 when two sections of house were connected. Captain Carr's kitchen is a chef's dream: Floor-to-ceiling IKEA cabinets, stainless double door LG refrigerator, Magic Chef 4-burner gas stove and two (2) sinks on opposite ends of the kitchen, one for dishes, one for cleaning seafood. A bank of windows over the main sink overlooks the screened front porch. The tiled kitchen also has radiant floor heat, a welcome addition on those cold winter mornings when you make your way to the kitchen for your first cup of coffee. Captain Carr's is one of the few homes on the island with a wood burning fireplace, this one an off-set modernist style with slate tile. The living room has light oak floors, a vaulted ceiling, double ceiling fans and four (4) large, floor-to-ceiling windows. The wall opposite the fireplace in the living room has built-in storage cabinets topped with built-in bookshelves and a rolling library ladder to reach the uppermost top books. The library ladder also serves as the "gang plank" to the loft space above the living room which can be used as a second bedroom for guests, office or storage. Two built-in sets of pocket doors are nice for privacy between master bedroom/living room and dining room/living room. A separate office space is located in the center of the house that connects the dining room area to the kitchen. There is a "hidden" laundry room behind louvered doors off the dining room with a full-size washer and dryer. The bathroom is LARGE and light filled with a huge Asian-style soaking tub and walk-in shower with radiant heated tile floors. House is heated by electric and a propane Rinnai tankless on demand hot water heater. The yard has a 10' x 11' garden shed (with electric), hydrangea bushes, confederate jasmine, Crepe Myrtle trees, a huge lemon fig tree (plenty homemade fig preserves have come from this one tree) and 2 raised beds for plantings. Waste from the house is removed through a modern, efficient 2-chamber peat septic system. Owner-ready, she comes fully equipped with all appliances and housewares plus some furniture - and two ocean kayaks to explore Ocracoke's hidden coves and marshes. Ocracoke Island's beautiful, undeveloped beach was rated as #2 Best Beach in the Nation in 2019. Some of the fishing, clamming and crabbing just a few minutes from your door.
